In the design world, some patterns transcend time—constantly being rediscovered, reimagined, and reinvented. Known for its dynamic, V-shaped zigzag design, chevron is currently making a bold comeback in interiors as a sleek alternative to more rustic looks. AKDO is tapping into this revival by spotlighting classic chevron styles from our Arcadia and Elite collections—timeless materials that are ready to be reintroduced with a fresh perspective.

The Geometry of Style

At its core, chevron is a geometric pattern formed by continuous “V” shapes that point in one direction. Unlike herringbone, where each piece meets at a right angle and alternates direction, chevron cuts meet at a perfect point to form a seamless zigzag. The result is a sleek, flowing effect that adds motion, structure, and visual rhythm to surfaces.

Chevron patterns are commonly used in wood flooring, stone installations, and tile applications, but they can also be found in textiles, fashion, and architecture. Their versatility lies in the way they can be subtle or striking depending on scale, color, and material.

The Timeless Journey of Chevron

The chevron pattern has been used for thousands of years, with early examples found on ancient Greek pottery around 1800 B.C. and later by the Romans, who ranged cobblestones in chevron formations to stabilize roads. Its decorative use flourished in 16th-century France, where it became a favored flooring design in chateaus and palaces, eventually spreading throughout Europe.

Though it fell out of favor in the 20th century, the pattern saw a strong resurgence in the early 2000s and is now one of the most popular parquet styles, alongside herringbone. Today, chevron remains a versatile and stylish motif, seen in everything from flooring to fashion and furniture.

A Fresh Take on Texture

Designers today are embracing chevron for its refined, architectural approach to texture—a sophisticated shift from the more rustic, horizontal lines of shiplap. Where shiplap evokes a sense of farmhouse charm and casual comfort, chevron introduces a level of precision and artistry that aligns with modern sensibilities. Its dynamic angles, symmetrical flow, and clean lines create visual movement, drawing the eye and adding depth without overwhelming a space.

Chevron is incredibly versatile, making it a go-to pattern for a wide range of interior aesthetics. It complements minimalist environments with soft, neutral tones by adding subtle dimension and interest. At the same time, it can act as a bold focal point in contemporary or maximalist settings when paired with high-contrast color palettes or richly textured finishes.

Beyond walls, chevron is gaining popularity in flooring applications where it offers both beauty and durability. In entryways, for instance, porcelain chevron tiles create a luxurious first impression, combining the timeless appeal of classic European design with the sleek sophistication of modern interiors. Whether used sparingly or as a central design element, chevron is proving to be a fresh, elegant alternative that continues to inspire creativity across design disciplines.
