Lace Collection: Romance Comes Home

Lace, as a fashion statement, dates back to the 16^th century, but as you may have noticed in recent years, the timeless fabric has been brought back into the spotlight, this time in the realm of interior design. One might even say that lace is in the midst of yet another renaissance, and inspired designs are emerging everywhere from the home to the most sophisticated of restaurants, hotels and spas.

The “runway piece” in AKDO’s Lace Collection is a floral “rug” that’s right at home with the finest fashions. Like any great couture, it may be custom sized or colored to order.

It’s evident that this time, the pattern has made its comeback with an edgier and more modern feel than ever before, while still maintaining the romantic roots for which it’s adored. This fresh approach is also the reason that lace is now making its way into spaces in which it wouldn’t have been used before.

One such application is AKDO’s own Lace natural stone mosaic collection. AKDO’s Creative Director, Kate Sterling, designed the groundbreaking collection, taking inspiration from the lace motifs found in the legendary fabric shops of New York City’s garment district. It consists of three patterns including Tulip, Vine and Curve, all of which offer matching borders. All of the patterns align, allowing any size field to be created, from a small accent to a large focal wall. The Lace collection also marks AKDO’s first time using mirror in a mosaic.

The mosaic rugs are a true testament to AKDO’s passion for craftsmanship. The marble pieces used in each rug are hand-cut and applied by artisans who employ the natural variation of four different stones to achieve the appearance of the Chantilly lace and floral patterns. The rugs are offered in a 40” x 80” size standard, and like all AKDO mosaics, may be customized.

The Curve pattern from the Lace collection adds a Parisienne feel to the floor of this bistro.

The enduring popularity of the Lace line, while certainly tied to the resurgence of lace in fashion, may also be attributed to its extraordinary beauty within the medium of mosaic. The white, nude and black color stories can be used to create either gentle or bold looks, emulating white lace’s ability to create a demure look, and black lace’s ability to create a bolder, more provocative style.
